Hormones of Labor: Melatonin

What is melatonin?

We have all heard of it. But what is it?

Melatonin is a hormone found in animals and even plants (the more your know, right?!). In us magical mortals, this hormone [melatonin] is released by the pineal gland in the brain at night to regulate our sleep/wake cycle.

Did you know that melatonin also plays a role during labour? It has been documented that melatonin plays an important function in initiating labor.

Scientists have even taken into consideration that using bright lighting could potentially delay the onset of labor.

But how does it work? When you go into labour, the hormone oxytocin stimulates the uterus to contract. Melatonin, which is also a hormone, works in conjunction with oxytocin, amplifying and regulating contractions. Having the right birth setting and environment is important to get the most out of these hormones.

How can you set the stage for the melatonin and oxytocin release?

  • Cut out as much bright lighting as possible. Setting up your birthing space with reduced lighting will help support the hormonal release you need in labor.

  • Have sex with your partner, get a foot rub, cuddle, etc. All those things that make you feel warm and fuzzy will help stimulate the flow of oxytocin.

  • Relax! Preparing for labor can be incredibly stressful, but it can also inhibit our oxytocin production. Making sure your birth environment is a calming and relaxing area will help with that mind-body connection, and free up space for that holy hormone: oxytocin.

  • Music. Music can make us feel all sorts of things, which is why it is incredibly useful during labor and birth. I suggest making a playlist that you plan to use at your birth and listening to it regularly. Alter your playlist as needed to make sure it promotes feelings of comfort and relaxation This will limit any unnecessary surprises, and allow the music to transport you into a calmer space.
